Toddlers and Tiaras

So this past weekend I was sucked in by the show Toddlers and Tiaras. WOW. I think my mouth feel open numerous times of what these little kids went thru for pageants! I mean spray tanning, teeth bumpers, false eye lashes, hair extensions and even WIGS! I mean WHHHAAAT?

Now I was in pageants when I was little. My sisters and I were all in pageants and it was not even close to the magnitude of what it is these days. They were always fun, upbeat and every girl always felt like a princess. We had a blast being in them.  See me below.
Yes we wore the frilly gowns, no they didnt cost thousands of dollars. Yes we curled our hair, but it was our actual hair! I watched an episode where there was this GORGEOUS red headed little girl and her mom purchased a wig and had it professionally colored to put over her already gorgeous hair. I was flabbergasted.
I heard numerous little girls say that their favorite outfit was the “outfit of choice” because it showed their stomachs!
oh… my… word.
After 2 hours of watching this madness I finally turned it off when a pageant came down to a tie and they broke the tie with which girl had the prettiest face. One mom said “They basically just told me my daughter was not pretty” I mean for little girls to hear this at such a young age is just wrong. I do not recollect anything like this being said when I was in pageants.  Most of the kids enjoyed being in pageants and enjoyed the spotlight, but I would never want my little girl put in a situation where she was told she was just not pretty enough.
Am I alone on this? Do you guys agree the pageant world has just gotten OUT OF CONTROL?

I was never in pageants as a child – but I do get sucked into that train wreck of a show every once in a while. My husband without fail turns to me and says something to the effect of "I cannot believe you watch this garbage!" I have to agree, I can't believe I waste my time watching, but at the same time I can't stop!

I can't stand that show, I am so disgusted by it. They say it builds confidence and then base contests on their looks? And then they make these girls up to no end and what does that tell them? That the real, natural, them isn't cute or pretty enough? Ugh!

    That picture is adorable!!
And yes I think that show is ridic. I don't see anything wrong with being in pageants, but on the show you can tell some of the girls don't even want to do it, its all the parents.

Tara, you were a cute little pageant girl!!

I don't follow them; after Jon Benet, I was so turned off that I just refused to watch them. For someone to say stuff like that around little girls just kills me.

I completely agree with you. I also did pageants growing up, and loved them. Most of them were scholarship pageants, so it wasn't JUST beauty based. It's INSANE how crazy it has gotten. It is def. out of control…I agree with you!

oh my gosh!!!!! How cute are you!!!!
I've watched the shows before and you're right some moms get alittle out of control- its kinda scary

I am always shocked by that show, it never fails. Where do these people get the money for all that stuff?????

All the parents say it builds confidence, but from what I've seen it either makes the kids miserable or turns them into total brats.

The moms in the audience doing the routine always gets me too. *fish face*nodding head*doing weird hand motions*

These are the things that make little girls go from innocent child to wanna be grownup. Playing dress up should be just that "playing" …these mothers need to have their heads examined – and resolve whatever insecurity issues the have within themselves. ..You are not alone… HHL

its horrible, those poor little girls think that they have to be beautiful to be important or to be the best…that show sucks me in,but I always wanna just pray for those babies…i feel so bad for them!

It's horrible. No wonder so many young girls have eating disorders, and over use plastic surgery. No one, especially little girls should be told that they are not as pretty as someone else. I admit, I have been sucked into that show before, and it makes me so angry. Brian has already said that if we have little girls, they are not allowed to do pageants. I was in a few pageants when I was younger, but it was something that was fun and I enjoyed doing. It makes me sad to see that pageants have been tainted and ruined by the need to be perfect.
On another note–how adorable were you in your pageant gown?! 🙂

I completely agree! I refuse to watch that show because it makes little girls feel like their entire worth is how they look. These girls are going to grow up with some serious issues!

I've never in my life watched any of these show until last week when I was sucked in too! I saw this one where this three year old's dad would say "You suck" and other mean things a grown man should not say to a three year old. I was shocked!

  15. Lea Liz

I totally agree!!!!!!! I cannot blieve all fo the things and alot of the little girls have such attitudes!!!!! I did pageants until I was about 17 but was nothing like what those little girls are going through!!

  16. Good Gals Inc

I'm so with you!! I love this show but sometimes it is so hard to watch!!! The dance competition I work with is very much the same way, the girls wear hardly anything, thrusting to Rhianna and I walk around in shock!! It's crazy!!!

My mom did pageants when she was a kid through her college days and they are nothing like now!!

    You are such a cutie!!!

I had been a pageant baby in a small town over 20 years ago and I agree things are changing and getting out of hand! I put my now 2yr. old daughter in them at age 18months and we havent gone back it was just too much as a mother reading a score sheet the judges gave scores on her face beauty and body type..for a baby! Something should be done I want real pageants back!!

  18. Chic Runner

I seriously think you were the cutest and I've seen this show and it's so CRAZY! Mom's are insane these days! I can't believe how they treat their daughters. :/

  19. PeaceLoveApplesauce

I've seen a few episodes and couldn't believe it either. But my opinion, to each their own. I wouldn't want someone to tell what what's right/wrong for my kids. So I would never judge another parent. But I for sure would never subject my daughter to such behavior!

They must have had some kind of marathon weekend of that show recently, because I too, was sucked in and ended up watching several episodes back to back at once. Did you see the one where that Asian guy was telling his daughter (who couldn't have been older than three or four), "YOU SUCK!" I was like, "Whaaa???" Some of those mothers are ridiculous. Mothers spending all that money on those pagents (some hiding it from Dad) and saying they spent thousands on it EVERY year – one lady even said pagents prevented them from buying a bigger house. I was also in awe just watching. And that one lady that yelled at her son in front of everyone? So sad. =(
